heres a quote of my original virtual dj guide
I'm a mod of a few different forums. but this whole mission of the dm2 happened when some kids came into the record store talking bout helping them setup a midi controller after a few post on forums i ended up here. now its a week later i have a few different people helping me figure this out and bam we got it all figured out and people are having a blast with it so i figured id write a tutorial to help people out with virtual DJ since I'm disappointed it doesn't have its own dedicated forum.
to start no tutorial is perfect
and here we go so i just got my new copy of virtual DJ 5 (pretty sweet right). i get a new version of virtual DJ every time it comes out since 3.0 to "test its functionality if you will" i try to use numark ttx1's with time code vinyls but hey dm2 real turntable no difference right NEH read later. now it took 2 weeks and i had everything working in virtual DJ 4.2 r build 3 (which was a little bit more difficult and you needed the scratch rings set as jog wheel and scratch wheel for the ring to work like a real record but now with 4.2 's 5.0 update this guide works the same and you can still use all your 4.2 skins and fx packages wink wink*). also i take no responsibility of the actions, damages or liability of anything you do in result of this tutorial. everything works for me and stupidity will not be my liability.
*if you dont want to hear my rant bout the fundamentals of DJing skip this section
but please listen carefully and remember with this guide and any other that helps with PC djing or CD djing you may read. PC djing using methods like this. I feel is not real DJing in most instances. (unless you have turntable time codes active..). Even if you have it setup properly with like Hercules DJ i feel this isn't "in most instances" real DJing. i consider real djs people who understand vinyl and are vinyl turntablists who can beat match and properly mix. An Hey if you want to go on from there that's cool. But i think you need to understand the fundamentals of what your doing. After all, these other methods of djing are essentially emulating vinyl. cause everyone of them have sync features, easy bpm displays,
ive seen people throw fat mixes in serato and you give them 2 records that you can beat match fairly easy, same genre as what they just spun. It takes them 8 plays through and 30 train wrecks before they get it. Which doesnt make you look that cool. if you have to use such features with out being able to understand and do it right whats the point you know. Kinda like math you should learn it before you bust out a calculator and are doing equations like 5x5 the rest of your life. I have nothing against all these methods and Cdj's... Its just i feel turntable is the way to go and i have mad love for the vinyl so i like to make a argument to keep it alive. But dont stop. Alot of what comes with good djing is constructive criticism. I say none of this to deture you from being the best dj you can be i just want you to remember the fundamentals of what your trying to do.
Remember all PC DJing is until you hit serato live and even torq is just for someone to gain a level of comfort with the idea of djing and turntabilism through a graphix interface and if you like it to go out and buy some numark tt200s for a 150 bucks and have a blast, you wont regret it. whether its in your bedroom at a backyard party or when your hanging out on Fridays.
i up until recently 2009 didn't consider CDJing to be real DJing but i have come around with the advancement in technology and some of these new decks are incredible. plus i was always told i had bias opinion cause i consider cdjing with like 1200s to be djing. but thats another story. so of 2009 i edited the header to go with the times as not to deter anyone.
maybe then if you like djing buy some tt200's or go straight for ttx1's i say numark cause be real technics are no longer the best technics arent the best of the turntables now. if this was 2000-2004 id say Technics are the best. but that's a topic for a different thread so with all that said, well ill say it one more time by PC DJing you should basically be trying to gain a level of comfort with the idea of DJing so you can eventually purchase turntables or a real pair of CDJs (not just expensive cd walkman player converted into a console) all to learn how to beat match and mix properly thank you. Ok so just beware when you buy equipment they have alot of garbage out there made to sound like its something good. like a kia.
OK OK OK OK so now we can begin
do this it basically goes like this
make sure the dm2 mixman software/driver is installed see driver cd thread for more info.
step 1 have any version of virtual DJ i recommend 4.2and above preferably 4.3 or 5.0 works the same you need legit versions. I have had alot of people msg me with cracked versions and wonder why it doesn't work and it looks so different. Atleast look for legit installs
step 2 Now you can install midi yoke at this time and configure it which is located at
www.midiox.com/index.htm?
www.midiox.com/myoke.htm
step 3 Install and then now you can load dm2midi and click on the scratch rings. Controller mode to overflow (this allows when the scratch ring makes a full revolution that it resets itself). Now you can have anywhere from normal to very high on sensitivity. As always check transmit event if scratch ring released, click on the [...] box where it should say multiple events click the [...] and and make sure its set on multiple event....... refer to example 3.1.
example 3.1
www.stickam.com/viewMedia.do?mId=176440962
step 4 Now you are ready to setup virtual DJ. In virtual DJ goto > settings >. Then under the > remote control> tab make sure > midi enable > is selected then open > config > by clicking on it. refer to example 4.1
example 4.1
www.stickam.com/viewMedia.do?mId=176441417
now when you click midi config a box should pop up like in example 4.2 but probably empty.
example 4.2
www.stickam.com/viewMedia.do?mId=176441040
to setup whatever you want you click add => then the type of action in this case click turntable => now you want to setup the left scratch ring to be your first turntable/deck so you highlight on the list scratch wheel => now move the ring clockwise till it shows its number and then click on relative but make sure its set for on deck one in the drop down menu it should look like this (note: you need to move the scratch ring for it to read the signal and properly assign it) example 4.3
example 4.3
www.stickam.com/viewMedia.do?mId=176441038
and at this point you should have working scratch rings. now you can feel free to setup your decks template however you want. feel free to copy mine as shown in the picture or make your own to your comfort. also for mine every button was not on multifunction it was set for single event in dm2midi{except the scratch rings they have to be on multi event to work} and theres more room to add-on you can also use the joystick for some neat fx or a x-y if you have as many as i do.
step 6
now a little something something extra to help all of you with virtual DJ be alittle bit better then most programs or the rest with more ease and wear on audio devices then the strain of mono channels on traktor
step 7
*note all these options are done under settings => sound setup
Now if need be you are able to do the asio setup. Where you can use your front headphone jack to simulate a head phone jack on a mixer or "your cue". Then the "rear channel" speaker out can be used as a main out. Now when I say "if need be" this means pretty much all of you that don't have decent or frigging sweet setup. Some one with only a red and green jack on the front and back. No 4.1-7.1 cards, but they are able to utilize this setup. Now this asio one is an option in which is somewhat good but lowers audio quality to less then CD quality (16bit) itll be half and a low kbps. I know some of you are prolly gonna be all like Oh no way man. But with 16 bit split in half what does that give you.
Also some people do the asio thing when they don't have too. I'm just saying it to get everyone started with headphones and master. Cause its the only way to do it right you cant just sync all the time and be a complete noob forever. Then you can broadcast with the audio in a live recording or over the INTERNET on a website. Like stickam or zonechill you cant tell but record to a source with that master. its worth it if you can hear what your trying to cue basically refer to example 7.1
example 7.1
www.stickam.com/viewMedia.do?mId=176441085
step 8
now heres something if you have realtek ac 97 audio like 15 million other people even 4.1 can do this and 5.1.
it takes your front speaker out and rear speaker out channels of 5.1 (all should be on the rear of your PC) and makes them be your master and cue with just one sound card.
* positives 90 percent of new PC's can do this and its 16 bit audio quality.
*negatives you cant piggy back your audio (piggy backing is a 1/4 inch cable to 1/4 usually some times spdif or a goofy digital patch cable that plugs in to where you CD ROM does that goes to from an output to a input) so you can hear it on your PC you can but then you cant hear main and to split them you go mono. i could be wrong but I'm not sure.
i base this on my realtek ac97 (which is my secondary sound card) when i go in 5.1 mode it disables my stereo jack on front panel of the PC and the rear stereo jack becomes the front 5.1 speaker out of your computer. (notes on this you have to make sure your audio settings are set to 5.1 output this can be in you audio settings for realtek ac97 or if you have 2 sound cards or manually done like this
start => programs => accessorys => entertainment => sound recorder then click effects tab and audio propertys and in playback and if you notice you can see midi yoke *wink wink*)
and here is how the setting should look it may only take a tweak to get it to work right for each system
www.stickam.com/viewMedia.do?mId=176441039
and the best one you can do
have 2 sound cards for me
primary: audigy 2zs with front 5.25 drive bay
secondary: realtek ac97 on board
OK i use my audigy as my headphones reason is cause audigy is my main sound device for my entire PC from fruity loops to rewire to reason to sound forge they all use this for output. so no other sounds aim skype calls during my radio show nothing get involved. with the main out put of my turntables
i also set it for 24 bit and use the digital out and loop it to the front for optical looping while retaining my main so i can blast the speakers for my main
heres the pic

umm OK so if you have questions message me on aim at djprotojeex or is it DJ protojeex i dont know hahaha um ya I'm on there if you need me feel free to reply with questions email is djprotojeex@aim.com if you want to email me thanks to everyone for the help i hope i helped in some way and if you need anything or have questions for vdj let me know peace.
